Key Statement:

Teaching undergraduate students educational theories through the use of art projects and hands-on practices in college teaching promotes student engagement and learning.

Abstract:

This poster highlights undergraduate teacher education students’ experiences using art to learn about and understand educational theories. Presented are student artifacts from college teaching activities, group work and field experience in elementary classrooms. Examples include photos of artwork and quotes from written reflections by students that link art with understanding principals of theory. Conference participants will learn about the usefulness of this approach in teaching theoretical constructs to college students, while creating assignments and learning that are innovative and engaging.

Outcomes:

1. Use art and hands-on practices in college teaching.
2. Discover innovative approaches to engage students in the classroom.
3. Critically think about their own teaching and how they can explore creative ways to help students better understand theoretical constructs in their own discipline.
